The proposal was raised at the September meeting of Ardee Municipal District following extensive archaeological excavations conducted at the historic tower house over the summer months.

Among the significant discoveries made at the site are a refuse pit containing butchered animal bones and fragments of medieval pottery, which are believed to pre-date the construction of the castle itself. Additionally, archaeologists uncovered a large circular medieval kiln.

Engineering and Design Constraints

During the meeting, Cllr. Dolores Minogue suggested that the council examine the possibility of installing a glass floor to allow visitors to view the archaeological features and artefacts during castle tours. However, Senior Engineer John O’Hagan stated that the idea could not be accommodated within the current design.

Cathaoirleach Jim Tenanty inquired if there was any way the finds could remain uncovered for public viewing. Mr. O’Hagan reiterated that because the lift shaft is situated directly in that location, visibility would be obstructed. He noted that photographic records and floor tile etchings would effectively bring the history to life for visitors once works are complete.

While Cllr. Minogue pointed out that glass floor viewing options have successfully enhanced tourism at other historic castles across Ireland, Mr. O’Hagan emphasized that implementing such a feature would be difficult and require a complete redesign of the extension vital for upper-floor access.

The site has been visited by the National Monuments Service, which has fully approved the excavation approach and plans to preserve the finds. The major conservation and regeneration project at Ardee Castle includes structural preservation, refurbishment of the castle, bridewell building, and courtyard, improved accessibility, and full integration into the wider ‘Ardee 2040’ regeneration initiative.
