People using e-scooters across Ireland will be legally required to wear high-visibility clothing and a helmet starting this Friday, under new rules signed by the Ministers for Transport.

The regulations mark the latest update in the ongoing implementation of micro-mobility laws designed to enhance road safety for both riders and pedestrians.

Under-18 Ban Delayed Amid EU Consultations

While the helmet and hi-vis requirements take immediate effect, further planned legislation aimed at banning all under-18s from operating e-scooters has hit a roadblock. The age restriction measure has been delayed by a number of months while the Government consults with the European Union on foot of legal advice.

Addressing the legislative rollout, Cathal Crowe, Fianna Fáil TD and member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, noted that authorities have not yet completely ruled out a total ban on e-scooters if safety concerns persist.

Commuters and local e-scooter users are advised to ensure they are fully compliant with the new high-visibility and protective gear mandates before taking to public roads this weekend.
