There was a palpable sense of relief and pure joy echoing through the Meath countryside this weekend, as the engines roared back to life for the first road race in the south since 2022.

Following a prolonged and difficult period of insurance struggles that threatened the very fabric of the sport, the CC’s Unlimited Kells Road Races made a highly successful return on Sunday. Skerries rider Michael Sweeney took center stage, completing a brilliant hat-trick with a textbook performance in the Grand Final Superbike showpiece on the 2.2-mile Crossakiel course.
Sweeney’s day was a rollercoaster; he was narrowly denied a win in a pulsating Supersport race by a mere 13 thousandths of a second by Kevin Keyes, but quickly rebounded to take a commanding double with victories in the Supertwin and Superbike classes. Lining up on pole on his MJR BMW for the final encounter, Sweeney managed his gap beautifully to cross the line over four seconds clear of Manx rider Marcus Simpson, while Keyes fought through to snatch a thrilling third on the final lap.
