Four-Goal Ardee St Marys Too Strong for St Mochtas in Championship Opener

Playing their first competitive fixture since their incredible title defense was halted last season by Newtown Blues, St Marys wasted absolutely no time reminding everyone why they have been such a dominant force in Louth football.

Sean Callaghan signaled their intent straight from the throw-in, launching an incredible two-pointer from distance inside the opening sixty seconds. While Sean Flynn and Jonathan Commins traded early scores, the game’s first major turning point arrived when Ciaran Keenan was hauled down inside the square. Adam Gillespie stepped up and clinically fired home the penalty.

St Mochtas fought back gamely, enjoying their best spell of the half when Gerry Garland picked out Andrew Lennon, who palmed to the net to narrow the gap. Conor Gillespie grabbed a quick-fire double before Ciaran Keenan capped the remarkable scoring burst with a brilliant individual goal, stretching the Ardee lead to an unassailable 4-10 to 1-6 advantage.

Late Mochtas Rally

To their credit, St Mochtas refused to throw in the towel. Spurred on by scores from Darren McMahon, Cormac Smyth, and Declan Byrne, they kept battling. Gerry Garland netted a second goal for Louth village with ten minutes remaining and added a late two-pointer, but Evan Malone had the final say for St Marys, ensuring a comfortable nine-point cushion at the final whistle.

While the entire Ardee squad performed admirably—with special mention to Man of the Match Sean Callaghan for a towering midfield display—the champions can take immense satisfaction from a thoroughly professional opening performance.
