Ardee Tidy Towns Condemns Mindless Vandalism at Shortcut Area
Volunteers who give up their free time to enhance the local streetscape have spoken out against repeated incidents of property damage and anti-social behavior at the popular Shortcut amenity in Ardee.
According to a statement released by the committee, floral displays on the bridge were heavily targeted, with planted pots overturned and plants forcibly ripped out. In an especially disheartening attack, the local community library box was raided, with books tossed down the embankment and directly into the river below.
Furthermore, green spaces and flowerbeds situated next to seating benches were trampled and pulled apart, instantly undoing countless hours of hard work invested by local residents and volunteers.
Disregard for Public Amenities and Environment
Aside from the physical destruction of flora and literature, volunteers reported dealing with heavy amounts of casual littering, including discarded takeaway cartons, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, food waste, wrappers, and napkins—despite a public waste bin being readily available at the main entrance.
🚫 Community Statement
“This behaviour is not representative of our town, nor of the many people who take pride in Ardee,” the group stated.
Organisers described the incidents as calculated destruction carried out by a small minority showing “no respect for their community or the environment we all share.”
Volunteers Undeterred by Setbacks
The committee confirmed that formal reports regarding the recurring vandalism will be logged with the relevant authorities. They noted that such actions not only degrade public infrastructure but actively threaten local biodiversity projects and dampen community morale.
However, despite the disheartening nature of the attacks, Ardee Tidy Towns stressed that their work will not halt.
“We remain committed to improving and maintaining the appearance of our town because we know the majority of residents value and appreciate these efforts. Ardee is full of people who care deeply about their community, and it is for them that we keep going.”
The group has issued an urgent appeal for local residents and park users to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity or vandalism to authorities immediately.
